Rapé Canela de Velho is prepared by hand with rustic Amazonian tobacco and Canela de Velho.
At Ancestrina, we associate it with the loyalties we build within our relationships and families: ways of loving, caring, belonging or sacrificing ourselves that we learned long before asking whether we still want to live that way.
Canela de Velho invites us to look at what burdens we continue to hold out of love, guilt, habit or belonging.

What makes Rapé Canela de Velho distinct
Not all our decisions begin with us. We learn ways of loving, caring, obeying, staying silent, holding things together and sacrificing ourselves, often within our families long before we can choose them consciously.
For us, Canela de Velho speaks of those loyalties.
What do I keep doing because it has always been done this way? What burden do I feel I must carry so I do not let someone down? Which parts of the way I love come from my own choice, and which do I repeat in order to belong?

How we understand it
At Ancestrina, we associate Canela de Velho with bonds, loyalties and inherited burdens.
Belonging is a deeply human need. Our family, history and the people we love shape how we learn to live in the world. But belonging can also have a cost.
Sometimes we follow a direction that no longer feels our own to avoid disappointing someone. We stay silent to preserve an apparent harmony, care for others until we abandon ourselves, repeat relationship patterns we no longer recognize as ours or feel guilt when we choose something different from what our family expected.
Canela de Velho invites us to examine those loyalties and recognize what we want to keep from our history and what we need to live differently.
We also relate it to the feminine. In our reading, the feminine is a symbolic language available to anyone, associated with bonds, care, receptivity, belonging and the capacity to nurture.
That territory can be an immense source of love. It can also be confused with carrying what is not ours to carry.
In our energetic reading, we therefore associate Canela de Velho with the fourth chakra. For us, the heart represents love and bonds; loving also means remaining on our own side within a relationship.
This distinguishes it from other varieties of the heart. Jurema concerns love and our capacity to give and receive. Samauma concerns empathy and compassion. Envira Ferro approaches forgiveness and burdens tied to the past.
Canela de Velho asks a different question: What am I still carrying in order to belong?
Origin and Production
Ancestrina’s rapés are made directly by elders of the Marubo, Munduruku, and Yanomami tribes in Brazil, with whom we maintain a direct relationship.
These preparations are made for Ancestrina based on each community’s traditional knowledge. When a variety contains tobacco, the tobacco used is rustic Amazonian tobacco grown by the communities themselves.
Each rapé retains its ingredients, but it does not follow an industrial formula with identical proportions. The quantities may vary from one batch to another depending on the knowledge and intuition of the Mayor who prepares it.
