Evidence and risks"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"product\"><div class=\"product\"> <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Is kambo a poison or a medicine? The words alone cannot settle the question. A substance may be biologically active and have a traditional role without being an effective treatment for a medical condition. The useful questions concern evidence, the preparation being studied and possible harm.<\/p>   <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What makes kambo biologically active?<\/h2>   <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kambo comes from the skin secretion of <em>Phyllomedusa bicolor<\/em>. Erspamer and colleagues\u2019 1993 pharmacological research studied active peptides and related them to gastrointestinal and cardiovascular effects. It did not establish that ceremonial use treats the diseases sometimes listed in promotional accounts.<\/p>   <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A practice involving physical exposure<\/h2>   <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Accounts describe exposure to the secretion through damaged skin. This makes it different from a purely symbolic ritual. An explanation of its context should not be mistaken for an application guide or assurance of safety.<\/p>   <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A facilitator\u2019s experience, fasting or the description \u201cnatural\u201d does not demonstrate a safe procedure.<\/p>   <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What would count as evidence of benefit?<\/h2>   <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A claim about a specific disease needs evidence for that condition and the actual intervention being offered. Research on a component cannot automatically be applied to the whole secretion. A report of feeling better cannot show what caused the change.<\/p>   <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sources cited here do not establish kambo as a treatment for cancer, lupus, addiction or depression, an immune booster or a detoxification method. Saying that more research is needed is not confirmation that those benefits exist.<\/p>   <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Documented harm is not proof of cleansing<\/h2>   <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC12495265\/\">2025 clinical report by Kelly and colleagues<\/a> describes severe low blood sodium and altered consciousness after a ritual, requiring intensive care. It investigates disturbed water regulation. One case establishes a warning signal, not a numerical risk for every user.<\/p>   <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vomiting or severe illness is not evidence that toxins are leaving the body. Confusion, collapse, seizures, breathing difficulty or persistent vomiting after exposure warrant urgent medical attention. Tell clinicians what was used; do not try to manage it with another ritual or excessive water.<\/p>   <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Keeping the question useful<\/h2>   <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask whether a proposed benefit is a cultural interpretation, an individual account, a laboratory finding or a clinical result. Those categories can be discussed respectfully without treating them as interchangeable.
