What does it mean for a plant to be sacred? The question invites us to explore a community’s relationships with it: its place in stories, its role in a ceremony and who passes on that knowledge. Understanding these meanings begins with specific names, places and voices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this introduction, \u201csacred plants\u201d brings together distinct cultural examples. It does not assume that all Indigenous peoples share the same beliefs. We explore ritual uses and community relationships without turning them into a catalogue of remedies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Peyote and maize in Wix\u00e1rika territory<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

UNESCO’s description of the Wix\u00e1rika route to Wirikuta<\/a> connects peyote and maize with sacred places, pilgrimage and agricultural cycles. It also highlights the transmission of knowledge between elders and younger generations. This example places a plant within relationships with territory and community life, extending beyond its material properties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Asemaa: tobacco as an offering<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In the Anishinaabe teachings shared by Robert Horton<\/a> through Seven Generations Education Institute in 2024, asemaa<\/em> is associated with offerings, respect and communication with the spirit world. His account emphasizes that practices vary among communities and individuals. Meaning also involves the intentions, relationships and ceremonial context of those taking part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carayur\u00fa and we: Makuna body painting<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Plants can also have a place in body painting. The 2004 book Etnograf\u00eda Makuna<\/em><\/a>, developed with Maximiliano Garc\u00eda and other Makuna participants, describes carayur\u00fa for the face and black paint called we<\/em> for hands and ankles during dances. The account gives these paints meanings of adornment and protection. Protection is presented as part of the documented ritual understanding, rather than as a demonstrated clinical effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Plants and transmission in Puerto Nari\u00f1o, Vaup\u00e9s<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

An account published by Rely Mej\u00eda in 2017<\/a> describes Puerto Nari\u00f1o, in the Yapu area of Vaup\u00e9s, where several Indigenous peoples live. It includes yag\u00e9, coca, tobacco, we and carayur\u00fa among the plants of knowledge received in its origin narrative. The account connects them with practices and knowledge passed between generations through everyday life and ceremonies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Understanding meanings in context<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

These examples reveal several dimensions of the sacred: places people travel through, offerings that express a relationship, paints that accompany a celebration and knowledge passed on to others. Their value lies in the differences each source helps us understand. Listening involves keeping these accounts grounded in their own contexts, rather than merging them into a single explanation of Indigenous life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
