In this article, we use the expression as a starting point for exploring practices and knowledge passed between generations. To understand a particular practice, we suggest looking at its context and sources before assigning it a purpose or an outcome.<\/p>\n<h2>A starting definition<\/h2>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/questions-and-answers\/item\/traditional-medicine\">World Health Organization<\/a> describes traditional medicine as systems, practices and knowledge concerned with health and well-being that developed in different historical and cultural contexts. We do not use \u201cancestral\u201d here as a clinical category or an official synonym for that definition.<\/p>\n<h2>What is each practice for?<\/h2>\n<p>One question guides this introduction: what does a practice mean to the people who maintain it? Before speaking on behalf of a tradition, we seek to identify who describes it, which community they refer to and the circumstances in which it takes place.<\/p>\n<p>At Ancestrina, we choose not to present all Indigenous peoples as sharing one explanation of the body, nature or spirituality. We also avoid assigning a universal role to the shaman. Each attribution needs an identifiable source and its own context.<\/p>\n<h2>Cultural meaning and clinical evidence<\/h2>\n<p>When reading an account of healing, ask what the word means: does it describe a personal experience, a spiritual interpretation or an effect on a disease? In this introduction, we address these questions separately so readers can identify the claim being made.<\/p>\n<p>WHO states that long-standing use does not establish a practice\u2019s safety and effectiveness: rigorous scientific evaluation is needed. This does not support a blanket claim that ancestral medicines are clinically validated.<\/p>\n<h2>Questions to ask while reading<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Does the source identify the practice, community and speaker?<\/li>\n<li>Does it explain the context or offer the author\u2019s interpretation?<\/li>\n<li>Does it distinguish testimony from a claim about treatment?<\/li>\n<li>If it promises a health outcome, what specific evidence supports it?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Our approach is to explore these forms of knowledge with curiosity and precision. Understanding their meaning requires listening to their sources; assessing a health claim requires examining the evidence behind
