Some people describe a quieter mind or spiritual connection. These experiences do not guarantee an outcome or establish rapé as a treatment for anxiety, depression or other conditions.

What is rapé?

Rapé is a powdered preparation found in different Amazonian traditions. Many blends contain tobacco and plant ashes, but their composition varies: the same ingredients cannot be assumed for every blend. When tobacco is present, nicotine and its potential for dependence need to be considered.

Preparing the space and understanding the context

A quiet setting may help people pay attention to their experience. Altars, incense, candles and other objects have meaning within particular practices. They are not universal requirements and do not make the use of rapé safe. Preparation and meaning vary between communities and individuals.

Knowing a blend’s origin and composition, discussing expectations and recognising personal limits are part of an informed decision. Cultural respect does not replace an assessment of risk.

Kuripe and Tepi: two forms of nasal administration

In this context, “inhaled rapé” refers to powder administered through the nose. These applicators use a breath or insufflation to deliver it. There is no combustion as there is with a cigarette, and this is not smoking.

Kuripe: self-application

A Kuripe usually has two connected ends, often in a V shape: one is placed at the mouth and the other at a nostril. The same person supplies the breath that delivers the powder. This distinguishes self-application from application by another person. Being able to use it alone does not mean it is harmless.

Tepi: application by another person

A Tepi is a tube through which one person blows rapé towards another person’s nose. Its general function is to facilitate application between people, unlike a Kuripe. It may be used in gatherings or ceremonial settings. It is not exclusive to a single ceremony, and no ritual rule applies to every community.

Receiving rapé from another person involves communication and consent, including the right to decline or stop. The person’s experience, hygiene and the setting matter, but they do not guarantee safety, perfect distribution or spiritual benefit. This guide does not prescribe a universal dose or strength of breath.

Experience and reflection afterwards

Some people interpret their experience in terms of presence, connection or introspection. These meanings are personal and shaped by context. They do not establish physical cleansing, healing or automatic transformation. An intense reaction does not, by itself, demonstrate a benefit.

Irritation and other discomfort deserve attention rather than a compulsory ritual explanation. Concerning symptoms call for medical attention.
