You explain what is affecting you. Your partner says that this time will be different. For a few days, you watch for signs that something has shifted. Then you hear yourself asking again: “How many times do I have to say this?”

When a requested change does not happen, the first task is not to find a more persuasive way to ask. It is to understand what has actually taken place. Was there a request, an agreement, or a promise that was never sustained? You can clarify what you need and respond to the relationship that exists. You cannot produce change on another person’s behalf. Recognizing that limit does not require you to accept conditions you do not want.

What exactly are you asking your partner to change?

“I need you to change” can refer to very different things: a concrete behavior, the way responsibilities are organized, a personal preference, an expression of affection, or even a feeling. Those requests cannot all be handled in the same way.

“Please tell me when the plans change” describes an action. “I want you to feel like telling me without being asked” also asks for spontaneity and a particular form of care. The first can become an explicit agreement. The second cannot be manufactured through instructions, even when its absence carries real meaning for you.

There is also a difference between asking someone to stop conduct that causes harm and asking them to share your tastes, rhythms, or personality. You cannot control another person, but that does not make every request equivalent or erase their responsibility for what they do.

A preference does not automatically become the other person’s obligation. Agreements, consent, safety, and existing responsibilities are different. “This is simply who I am” does not cancel a commitment that was freely made or the consequences of repeatedly failing to keep it.

The request may already be clear

If your partner can explain what you are asking and why it matters, another detailed explanation may not be what is missing. They may not want to make the change, may not be able to sustain it in the form you requested, or may not consider it a priority. Asking directly can provide more useful information than trying once more to prove that your reasons are valid.

You might ask: “Do you actually want to work on this, or are you saying yes because it is difficult to tell me no?” This is not an easy question. It opens a different conversation from “How many times do I have to explain it?”

Your partner may offer an alternative: “I cannot do it that way, but I can take responsibility for this part.” An alternative deserves to be examined on its own terms. What does it solve? What remains unresolved? Can both of you realistically count on it? You can recognize the effort involved and still decide that what is being offered is not enough for the relationship you want.

Not knowing how, not being able to, and not wanting to are different

A practical difficulty may require learning a skill, organizing resources differently, or asking for support. A health limitation may require professional assessment. A lack of willingness raises another kind of conversation. It is not useful to assume one explanation and use it to close the others without asking.

At the same time, you do not need absolute certainty about your partner’s motives before acknowledging a sustained effect. If a responsibility continues to fall on you, that fact matters even when you cannot determine whether the other person cannot, will not, or does not know how to take it on.

Understanding the context and recognizing your own limit can coexist: “I understand that this is difficult for you. I also cannot continue carrying all of it in this way.” Neither sentence has to erase the other.

What changes when there was an agreement?

If both of you accepted a commitment, the conversation includes a responsibility that did not exist when there was only a request. You can ask what happened to the agreement without beginning from zero and defending again why it mattered.

An agreement is not a permanent sentence. It can be revised. But openly saying that you no longer want or are able to keep it is different from allowing your partner to continue relying on it. Renegotiation has to include the consequences of what was previously promised.

When “this time I really will” has been repeated, look at what supports the new promise. Is there a different decision, a practical resource, a clear plan, or a new form of accountability? Or is the same promise being offered again because it lowers the tension of the moment?

An apology can matter without being enough to rebuild confidence in future behavior. You also do not have to demand perfection in order to distinguish an occasional failure from a pattern that has not changed.

What would make the agreement reliable again?

“I did it this week” is information, but some agreements require continuity. It helps to define what change was actually requested and which observable actions would show that it is being sustained, without turning every setback into proof that nothing has changed.

If the issue was failing to communicate when plans changed, you can look at whether your partner now lets you know, what happens when they forget, and who takes responsibility for repairing the consequences. An explanation may be relevant. The behavior you need to be able to count on is still part of the conversation.

Some couples use reminders, shared calendars, or other practical supports. Support can be part of an agreement when both people consent to it. If you must direct every step without having chosen that role, the distribution of responsibility needs to be named honestly.

The aim is not to create a surveillance system. It is to know whether a shared commitment exists in practice or only in the words used after each conflict.

A boundary is not a technique for producing change

“If you do not do this, you will see what happens” is designed to provoke a reaction. A personal boundary clarifies what you will no longer participate in or sustain and what action remains available to you. The difference is not merely a calm tone. It lies in the purpose of the statement and in whether you can take responsibility for what you announce.

For example, deciding not to take on new shared expenses without an agreed budget concerns your own participation. Repeatedly threatening to leave so that the other person finally complies can keep both of you inside another cycle of pressure and temporary promises.

Maintaining a boundary may involve discomfort, cost, disappointment, or a decision you would rather not face. That is why it helps to consider what you will do if the change still does not happen before announcing a consequence that only makes sense if it forces your partner to give in.

What can you do if nothing changes?

At Ancestrina, we distinguish recognizing a condition from choosing to live with it. You can revise the agreement, consider a new attempt with different support, or decide that the current conditions are not ones you are willing to choose. The sentence “my partner does not change” does not decide for you which response is right.

Before asking again, clarify three things: What change was actually accepted? What would make it possible? What has happened consistently rather than exceptionally? If there was never a genuine agreement, the problem may not be failed execution. It may be that one person has continued to wait for a commitment the other never truly made.

You are not required to become indifferent, and you do not have to pretend that the issue is minor. The point is to stop confusing repeated effort with control. You can speak clearly, propose, listen, negotiate, and decide. You cannot supply the other person’s willingness or carry both sides of an agreement indefinitely.

When couples therapy may help

Couples therapy can offer a structured place to identify what each person is asking for, distinguish requests from commitments, and examine the pattern that follows each promise. It does not guarantee that your partner will change, and it should not be used as another strategy for forcing a particular answer.

It may still help both of you see the situation more clearly: whether there is a shared problem you are willing to work on, whether the proposed changes are realistic, and what each person will do with the information that emerges.

Continue exploring: When One Partner Wants Change · Couples and Relationships

By Víctor Silva and Marcela Gómez You know the conversation by heart.
