This introduction looks at two contexts in the Colombian Amazon and one food example from the Peruvian Amazon. They offer starting points for learning about the region without presenting it as a single tradition.

Peoples and knowledge holders

The Union of Indigenous Yagé Medics of the Colombian Amazon, UMIYAC, brings together the Cofán, Inga, Siona, Koreguaje and Kamëntšá peoples. Its account includes both traditional practitioners and women with knowledge of plants. Recognizing this range of people is part of understanding their knowledge.

In its code of ethics published in 2000, UMIYAC made clear that it did not speak for all Indigenous peoples. It also explained that its members had their own names in their languages and that “shaman” was a term used by outsiders. This invites attention to who is speaking and whom they represent.

Yagé and ayahuasca in ceremonial life

UMIYAC uses the names yagé, ambiwaska and ayahuasca for a plant preparation it considers sacred. In its own account, ceremonies involve spiritual healing as well as gathering, conversation and sharing experiences. The meaning of the practice therefore includes relationships between people alongside the plants used.

These accounts help explain the place of yagé within those communities. Describing spiritual or healing purposes does not, by itself, demonstrate that a preparation produces a particular medical outcome.

Songs and rituals along the Pirá Paraná

The Pirá Paraná River in Vaupés provides another context. The peoples within the Indigenous association ACAIPI include the Makuna, Barasano and Tatuyo. UNESCO’s account of the jaguar shamans of Yuruparí describes songs, dances and the transmission of guidelines for caring for people and their territory. These are situated practices with their own meanings.

The ecological-cultural calendar documented by Gaia Amazonas helps explain this relationship. In the Pirá Paraná example, it connects seasons, harvests, daily activities and rituals. The account includes a calendar created by Tatuyo people from the upper Pirá and notes that each people may represent its calendar differently.

Camu-camu as an Amazonian fruit

Camu-camu, Myrciaria dubia, introduces another use of plants. A document from the Peruvian Amazon Research Institute describes its vitamin C content and records its consumption in drinks, ice cream and rural households. It is presented here as food. Its nutritional composition alone does not establish a ritual use or demonstrate that it strengthens immunity or treats disease.

Knowledge and care for the land

Preserving knowledge also involves sustaining places where it can be learned. ACAIPI’s document, published in 2017, records research conducted by young people under elders’ guidance on territories, seeds, cultivated plots and sacred places. These projects show active transmission connected to the communities’ own questions and decisions.

Reading these sources with attention to place and date helps distinguish a documented tradition from interpretations or services that may now be presented in its name. For a broader framework, explore the meaning and cultural context of ancestral medicines.

A cultural introduction to Amazonian ancestral medicine through UMIYAC’s accounts, knowledge from the
