indigenous medicine

Shamanism is an ancient healing tradition and also a way of life. It is a way to connect with nature and all creation. The word shaman comes from the Tungus tribe in Siberia. Anthropologists coined this term and have used it to refer to spiritual and ceremonial leaders among indigenous cultures around the world. The word shamanism can be used to describe the ancient spiritual practices of these indigenous cultures.

Shamanism comes from nature itself. Shamanic practices harness the power that Mother Earth has to offer and ancient indigenous teachings are derived from the simple truths of nature. And one of the main strengths of shamanism is healing and medicine.

Shamanism and medicine

Shamanism is not only concerned with the health of the individual, but also with the health of the entire community. This includes all people, plants, animals, and all life. This is why in shamanism, there are many healing methods, and many of these medicines come from plants.

The Shipibo culture, which originated along the Ucayali River in the Peruvian Upper Amazon, is well known for shamanism and plant medicine. Among the indigenous cultures of the Peruvian Upper Amazon, the Shipibo are one of the few cultural groups that have managed to maintain their language, art, and mystical plant medicine. The Shipibo tribe seems to have a particularly strong relationship with ayahuasca and the Shipibo are considered by many to be the most qualified ayahuasca healers in the Peruvian Amazon.

The use of Shipibo imagery related to ayahuasca is widespread and Shipibo ikaro patterns are synonymous with ayahuasca and its practice throughout Peru. In fact, many mestizo healers (healers of mixed Spanish and Peruvian descent who have moved away from indigenous traditions and identity) still wear Shipibo cushmas (robes) in ceremonies.

Ayahuasca as medicine

Ayahuasca is an Amazonian plant medicine that has been used for centuries, possibly thousands of years, by indigenous and more recently mestizo ayahuasca shamans in the upper Amazon in Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, and Brazil. There are more than 40 other known names for this sacred medicine, including caapi, natema, mihi, and yagé.

Unlike all other sacred plant medicines, ayahuasca is made from two plants: the ayahuasca pod and the leaf of the chacruna plant. Both plants are harvested from the jungle to create a potent blend that offers access to the spirit realm and an energetic world that we cannot normally perceive in our ordinary state of consciousness.

The origins of the shamanic use of ayahuasca are lost to history, but there are many different stories among the indigenous tribes of the Amazon as to how they initially came to work with this medicine. In an indigenous context, ayahuasca was used by the shamans of the Amazon region for healing and divinatory purposes.

Complex rituals surround the preparation and use of ayahuasca that have been passed down from generation to generation of healers. By performing healing ceremonies, they use medicine as a diagnostic tool to discover the roots of illnesses in their patients.
